  • How long do I have to avoid eating or drinking if having anesthesia?
    • You should refrain from eating or drinking for 8 hours prior to surgery.  The exception is any medication you are scheduled to take.  Please call the office for specific medication questions.

 

 

  • When can I eat after surgery?
    • Most patients can begin to eat about one hour after surgery, once the gauze is removed.  Your doctor will give you specific instructions regarding your surgery.  For extractions you should maintain a soft diet for comfort.

 

 

  • How soon can I brush after surgery?
    • You can brush your teeth about 24 hours after surgery.

 

 

  • How long do I have to keep the gauze in my mouth?
    • You should bite on gauze for one hour.  If you are still bleeding then replace the gauze for another hour and then recheck the wound.  You should expect to see a small amount of blood in your mouth for most of the day following surgery.  If you have any questions or are concerned about your bleeding you should call our office.

 

 

  • Is it normal to swell after surgery?
    • Most patients will experience some degree of swelling.  This is usually worst about 3 days following surgery.  The swelling usually lasts about one week but varies depending on the individual patient and the surgery that was done.
